Cart Ruts of Malta

The usually timid Draconid Meteor shower may have found an attitude, unleashing up to 1000 meteors an hour on Oct. 8, a perky sunspot on the far side of the Sun may be bubbling with M-class flares, yet it is the cart ruts of Malta that has me pondering.

No one disputes the “ruts” are ancient, at least 4 – 5 thousand years old. They cross the island of Malta, kilometres long in places, carved into the limestone for a purpose unknown.  Some vanish into the sea, others march on towards undetermined locations. They are called cart ruts because they appear to have been carved into the stone by repeated use. No one is certain if this use was from a wheel or a sled. The only certainty is they were man made.
