Mention Oregon – I guarantee armed militia doesn’t come to mind. Above all U.S. states, Oregon conjures images of Birkenstocks, Tofurkey and craft beer. A polite, mind your own business, unassuming enclave of hippies and loggers – boy, was I wrong.

News of Saturday’s armed “militia” occupation of a federal building shattered notions of sleepy little Oregon. Led by Ammon Bundy ( son of Nevada’s Cliven Bundy – see link below ) out of state “patriots” seized headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, promising to occupy federal property “for years” if necessary. Armed occupation followed a march in Burns, Oregon to protest prosecution of local ranchers Steven and Dwight Hammond Jr. for burning brush on federal land.

“He said many would be willing to fight — and die, if necessary — to defend what they see as constitutionally protected rights for states, counties and individuals to manage local lands.”

“The best possible outcome is that the ranchers that have been kicked out of the area, then they will come back and reclaim their land, and the wildlife refuge will be shut down forever and the federal government will relinquish such control,” he said. “What we’re doing is not rebellious. What we’re doing is in accordance with the Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land.”

Ammon, his brother Ryan and indeterminate number of hard core militia posted a call for all patriots to join them in Oregon. Ammon’s Facebook post urging concerned militia (and weapons) to make their way to Malheur refuge has been taken down by Facebook.

Holy crap sentiments are difficult to define. Days of applying Canadian sensibilities to American behavior are long gone. Despite an enormous capacity to suspend belief in matters of the sacred U.S. constitution – how could this not be considered domestic terrorism? Could a band of African Americans hunker down, weapons ready in occupation and defense of their constitutional rights? How about Muslim Americans storming a federal building to protest unfounded racial profiling?

The Hammonds broke the law, as did Ammon’s father Cliven Bundy when charged with tax evasion. Since when does proclaiming yourself a “patriot” negate consequences of flagrant disregard for law? In which alternate dimension does white America get to strut like Peacocks under the guise of constitutional privilege?

Self proclaimed patriots, armed and in possession of government property, strikes me as criminal. Each and every one of these numskulls should be prosecuted and sent to prison. For the life of me,  why America fuddles about in such cases eludes reason.

  1. I don’t understand why the media aren’t all over this like a rash. These guys don’t form a militia. They’re terrorists. Just to really make things even worse, five of the GOP contenders have said they support them.

  2. Basically these terrorists are supported by the Oligarchs running America and American news outlets. The Koch brothers are drooling at the prospect of free access to federal land where they can pillage and plunder to their hearts content,

    • …But hasn’t Obama played a masterful hand, driving the gun debate this week. It’s going to drive the Conservatives nuts, forcing them to oppose what will be perfectly reasonable changes.

      • I’m wetting my knickers in anticipation of Obama’s speech later today. On another note – Somali rebels are using video clips of Trump to recruit fresh terrorists. Sigh.

      • Saw that.

Yeah, it’s a brilliant political move by Obama. There won’t be anything sweeping, nothing even a 10th of what is required, but it will push the Republicans to take up extreme right-wing positions. And that’s clever, at least from the political angle.

  3. The Pacific Northwest is no less racist than the deep South, but Oregon and Idaho are the worst parts, by far – and that includes parts of central and eastern Washington.

I like my home on the Washington coast just fine…and at some point, climate change just might see me moving back to Southeast Alaska later on.
    That’s a big “might,” mind you…but anything’s possible.

    • Shortly after 9/11 a friend (of African heritage) who was actively present on political forums, received an invitation to travel from Vancouver to the Seattle area. The premise being a face to face pint of beer with a person from one of the forums. This person’s forum persona was intelligent and reasonable, my friend thought enough of their online exchanges to agree.Long story short – a few days before their meeting my friend did some digging on this man.Holy crap! Turns out Seattle man served prison sentences twice. First conviction – as a young man he was charged with plotting to kill Martin Luther King. Second conviction – attempted murder for trying to run over a black child on bicycle in his neighborhood. Obviously my friend didn’t go, but it begs the question – why was he luring my black friend to his home? Yikes.
As for Idaho – I think the Arian Nation headquarters are in Coeur D’Alene.
My theory on racism, patriots, and militia – stick to the coast, they loathe city living 🙂

      • Yep – Idaho has been the bastion for the Aryan Nations for some time, although I think that their Hayden Lake compound was awarded to a woman in a civil case, over a decade ago.

Yikes, indeed – I shudder to think what reasons that psycho was attempting to lure your black friend to their home! Makes me think of the notorious pig farm in Canada…I think that it was given the nickname “Pickton’s Palace,” IIRC
People do some of the most horrific things to their fellow human beings…
