You’ll Never Walk Alone

A friends’ email got me thinking about the power of music to unite large numbers of people with a common goal. Born and raised in Liverpool before imigrating to Canada, affinity with Liverpool football club remains dear to his heart.  He’s the reason I know Liverpool kicks it out at Anfield where every home game begins with You’ll Never Walk Alone. In his words “the anthem of all football anthems” sung as a hymn by thousands of faithful filling the stands.

Not being much of a sports fan forgive me if I’ve overlooked similar anthems in North America. Pretty sure Stomping’ Tom Connors Good Old Hockey Game doesn’t pack the same punch. My point being, it’s remarkable how music solidifies a singular objective and You’ll Never Walk Alone does just that.

“When you walk through a storm,  hold your head up high  and don’t be afraid of the dark  ……”

  1. PS – another good friend is mad about Chelsea, so much so he has their emblem tattooed on his body for all eternity. Ever the Switzerland of football crazed acquaintances, I’ll watch from the periphery and marvel at anthems which unite the masses. Hugs.

  2. My dear friend Notes, the North American anthems you possibly overlooked might be Queen’s ‘We Are The Champions’ and ‘We Will Rock You’. After a Queen concert in 1977 the audience spontaneously launched into ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, possibly prompting Queen to write those two classics. YNWA is currently atop a British chart of Coronavirus Lockdown Songs, popular as choices for giving tribute to front line health workers. I know you are a fan Arkenaten and Fearless was a fine tribute from Pink Floyd, one of over 100 covers of the song.

  3. I have been absent from blogging for awhile…too many demands… I see you have expanded your presentation— I always enjoyed your blog and I still am! Thank you for your recent visit to my blog. If I remember correctly, you live in Vancouver? One of my daughters lives in Bellingham. I have visited her 4x— Vancouver 2x. Love that area of the world! Believe it or not, just a few days ago I had this very song …YNWA..pumping through my heart… recalling it from my freshman year of high school. Amazing to me that they sang it at a sporting event— gives me hope for humankind! Nice to read you again—thank you!
