Despite several attempts to reach you, previous requests to watch a clip from The Newsroom remain unanswered. Understandably there’s a lot on your mind. I know how difficult it is to pull yourselves away from Trump tweets, partisan jibber-jabber, criminal investigations and threat of government shut down if your leader doesn’t get his wall. That said, surely you can spare six minutes to watch this video. If America matters to you, watch to remember what you once cared about…..
The clip below isn’t new to this blog, I’ve lost count of how many times Will McAvoy’s scene from HBO’s short lived series The Newsroom graced this page. I vow to post this over and over again. Not for the certainty most won’t bother to watch, but for the slim chance a handful of Americans might take sentiments of a television news anchor to heart.
The Newsroom was an HBO political drama series that aired from June 2012 – December 2014. Starring Jeff Daniels as Will McAvoy, news anchor at fictional Atlantis Cable News. Twenty five episodes over three brief “seasons” cemented The Newsroom atop my list of remarkable TV productions. Posted below are a handful of clips chosen to illustrate America’s indifference towards common sense truth – scripted Will McAvoy snippets ringing truer than anything blithered on non-fictional U.S. media today. The content may be dated, the message is anything but.
Billed as “political drama”, HBO aired 25 episodes of The Newsroom over 3 seasons. Between June 2012 and December 2014 Jeff Daniels portrayed Will McAvoy, anchor at fictitious ACN (Atlantis Cable News). Creator and principle writer Aaron Sorkin told Newsweek in 2012 –
The Newsroom “is meant to be an idealistic, romantic, swashbuckling, sometimes comedic but very optimistic, upward-looking look at a group of people who are often looked at cynically. The same as with The West Wing, where ordinarily in popular culture our leaders are portrayed either as Machiavellian or dumb; I wanted to do something different and show a highly competent group of people.”
Let me assure you, The Newsroom delivered in spades. Idealistic dodged snares of robotic optimism, romantic let failures be human, swashbuckling struck chords of purpose rather than folly. How Sorkin applied his vision of cynicism, optimism, idealism and humanity, catapulted The Newsroom to relevant social commentary.
Pondering Donald Trump, American politics, propaganda, racial divide, gun violence, blame and fear, turned thoughts to ACN anchor Will McAvoy. Please America, take a moment to hear his words –
